The typical nose wheel assembly in a Challenger II and in the Excalibur look like this: mvc-143f.jpg (178497 bytes)  As you can see, this is held in place with 4 hose clamps.  There is nothing wrong with this technique and it has been stable for many years.  However, Mike wanted to improve on this.  (Perhaps he didn't trust my landings!  HA)  His modification included welding tubes on either side of brackets, and then bolting these to the ends of the nose wheel assembly.  This modification accomplished two things:

  1. It held the assembly in place.

  2. It keeps the assembly from moving laterally as well as vertically.

Plus, it is stronger than hose clamps!

Here is the assembly before the modification and without the hose clamps: MVC-878F.JPG (162282 bytes)  Here is the first bracket with the tube welded onto it: MVC-880F.JPG (155078 bytes)  Another view: MVC-881F.JPG (136650 bytes)  Here is what the bracket looks like when bolted to the nose wheel assembly: MVC-882F.JPG (130766 bytes)  Here is the the assembly with a temporary rod in place to simulate the nose wheel support bar: MVC-883F.JPG (184142 bytes)  Here is the assembly in place: MVC-884F.JPG (118849 bytes)  Here is Mike spot welding the front of the assembly onto the support bar where the rudders pedals connect: MVC-889F.JPG (142903 bytes)  Here are the parts being painted with a rust inhibitor: MVC-891F.JPG (202042 bytes)  The nose wheel assembly in place: MVC-892F.JPG (240349 bytes)  Here it is with the wheel: MVC-893F.JPG (231548 bytes)  After tightening the bolts down, it looks like this: MVC-894F.JPG (150254 bytes)  This is the whole assembly: MVC-897F.JPG (199502 bytes)  She is finally on her feet! MVC-901F.JPG (201955 bytes)
